Testimonial |
The D.H. Chen Foundation awards two scholarships annually to students from Hong Kong who already have offers from Oxford University. Specifically, the foundation is looking to support students who demonstrate civic mindedness, potential in becoming future leaders, and commitment to social service.
As part of the application process, I was asked to respond to a series of short answer and essay questions to provide examples of my social commitment, academic merit and financial need. Whereas students attending universities in Hong Kong are shortlisted, interviewed and selected by the foundation, students attending Oxford have their application sent directly to the corresponding department at the university, and are then selected by Oxford University staff. The foundation is then informed of the decision and welcomes the two recipients as scholars. The D.H. Chen Foundation is incredibly committed to fostering the potential of their scholars and ensuring they maximize the opportunities available to them. Subsequently, recipients of the scholarship receive more than just financial support that covers tuition and accommodation. To encourage students to seek practical, real-life experience, the foundation provides funding for students to pursue internships abroad. Moreover, scholars are connected to an incredibly talented scholars' network where they can liaise and collaborate with other recipients of the scholarship, in addition to being assigned a mentor who can provide guidance on navigating opportunities provided by the foundation and career paths. Furthermore, we are frequently informed of a range of social service prospects we can participate in to continue executing the philanthropic values of the foundation in remaining committed to the community. We are also invited to an annual scholars' dinner, and most importantly, are encouraged to be future leaders. - Samanwita Sen, D.H. Chen Scholar 2018 |
